On the Danish Cartoon Controversy
In the wake of the "Danish Cartoon Controversy", which incensed Muslims worldwide and aggressed against the highest sanctities of the Islamic faith, the right to freedom of speech - the freedom to speak freely without censorship (or limited censorship in the case of libel, slander and incitement) - has again come under the spotlight. The freedom to criticize religion or a doctrine is one thing, but what about when such free speech is insulting to millions (as in the case of the freedom to deny the Holocaust, verbally abuse homosexuality, or insult a particular religion)? This declaration, drawn up by a veritable group of Muslim scholars, urges that freedom of speech be tempered with civility and responsibility, and that it not offend for the sake of offending.
