The Prophet, peace be upon him, once said that God said: "O son of Adam! Free yourself for My worship and I shall fill your hearts with sufficiency and will remove your poverty. But if you do not, I shall fill your hands with distractions and will not lift your poverty." So as we settle into the new Islamic year of 1433H, let us renew our hope in God and seek to put first things first. This reminder by Abu Aaliyah is an exhortation to do precisely that. For when our trust and hope in God gets eroded, we lose the script of the human story. It is then that we begin to find it hard to say what we are about, what really matters, and why.
